Sports have always been an important part of my life. Whether it is watching sports as a spectator or participating as an athlete. Being involved in sports as an athlete provides so many benefits. There are the physical benefits of staying in shape and being healthy. Then there are the social benefits of learning how to work well with others towards a common goal. Then there is just the pure joy and excitement that comes from competing with others. These are the aspects of sports that have always been interesting to me throughout my life. When our son and daughter were born we decided that introducing them sports at an early age would be beneficial to their growth and development.
It is now almost 13 years later and for the past three years I have had the pleasure of coaching my 13 y.o. athlete’s basketball and soccer teams. It is very exciting to be a role model to your family. They not only see you as their parent but their coach as well. This past year I have seen my son improve leaps and bounds in both soccer and basketball. Although basketball is his favorite he is a true competitor in whatever sport he plays. Getting him to this level didn’t happen over night. We provided him with the opportunities and he put in the effort of practicing and training.
With training and practice it is important that we also taught him about nutrition and hydration. We stressed the importance of eating right when it comes to improving both physically and mentally. It is also very important that you remain hydrated before, during and after any physical activities. For the most part we encourage him to hydrate with water before, during, and after any of his games. However sometimes water alone is not enough. When an athlete sweats he or she loses water along with important electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Drinking water by itself is not going to replace those important electrolytes.
When it comes to this need it is good to supplement their hydration with a drink like POWERADE Zero. We use the POWERADE Zero because it is important not to have too much sugar while competing. In our house we do our best to limit the amounts of our sugar intake to natural sources like fruits. POWERADE Zero is a good alternative to the regular POWERADE. It provides the same amount of electrolytes and hydration without the added sugar.
As our son and daughter are competing we encourage them to do their best and we put a high emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork. As a parent/coach I often have to take off the parent hat. This is the part I enjoy the best. Inspiring and directing young athletes can be very rewarding. When they are losing you encourage them to work harder and not give up. When they are winning you show them how to remain humble and win with grace. Teaching the young athletes to be respectful towards the referees and the opposing team is very important. All too often I see coaches yelling and screaming at their team. Sometimes this works and the team is successful. However I would like to think that young and old athletes do not like to be yelled at and belittled. They need a coach to be firm, caring, and motivational. That is the way I coach and it works for me.
