This blog is a continuation from Orange is the New Black Part 1
After our interview we were then taken down to meet Costume Designer Jenn Rogien who gave us a tour of the shows wardrobe. It was amazing to see all of the clothes that they have for the cast members. Jenn told us how the prison uniforms were not like hospital scrubs. They were the same type of uniforms used in prisons and were real heavy duty. She showed us the prison boots that the shows inmates had to wear and they were the real deal. Jenn said at first the cast was enthusiastic about wearing authentic prison boots. But then after a while the novelty wore off when they realized how heavy they were. In the room where some of the wardrobe was located was a washing machine and dryer and an assortment of stain removal products. She told us that there had been times when a cast member was eating lunch and got a food stain on their costume and that she and her crew had to get the stain out before they could go on set again. Imagine an inmate in a fight scene with a big chocolate stain in the middle of their prison uniform. Jenn then took us to some of the other wardrobe rooms and a changing and fitting room. You could see the amount of hard work that goes into dressing the cast of a show. There are so many things that need to be considered when dressing characters in a show. For example when they do a flashback scene for any of the characters they have to make sure that the clothes being shown are authentic to that time period. Jenn showed us some old clothes catalogs on a shelf that they used to help them do research for different time periods.
After our wardrobe tour we were told we would be taking a tour of the set. While we were waiting for a few minutes in the lobby I saw Yael Stone who plays ‘Lorna Morello’ walk by. She seemed kind of curious as to who we were and what we were doing. In the show her character has a really unique Boston/Italian accent. But wouldn’t you know she is actually an Australian native? I also saw Samira Wiley who plays ‘Poussey Washington’ pass by with her lunch. We were then taken to tour the set while the cast and crew took a lunch break. We walked through Red’s kitchen, the prison cafeteria, the visiting area, and the prison bunks, finally ended up in the prison bathrooms and shower area. The set is done really well.
They even have fake black mold on the shower curtains. I was only able to take pictures in the bathroom area since they didn’t want me to give away any spoilers about season 2. After leaving the bathroom area I walked past the commissary, which to my surprise had actual items and a price list inside. Kudos to the set designers and the crew for creating a very authentic set. While inside you get the feeling that your in a real prison. Even the bulletin boards posted throughout had real looking prison memos and signs.
When we were finished with the set tour we went back to our conference room waiting area. We then went in groups to watch them live filming some scenes on set. I was given a headset with a receiver so I could hear everything that was happening on the set. I sat with several of the crew members who were watching the current scene being shot on two monitors. While I was sitting there quietly listening and watching them do take after take of one scene I thought about how much work goes into filming a show or movie. I’m in awe of the many people that work behind the scenes on a show to make things happen. After a couple of minutes of watching the scene prison guard Wanda Bell played by Catherine Curtin came out and chatted with us for a bit. She of course was in costume and had the presence of authority as she stood there in front of me. Of course out of character she came across as a very sweet person who was engaging us in conversation about children and being a mother. It was nice to see her smiling and joking around with us. After watching and listening to the director say cut and lets do that scene again several times I waited for a break in the action before thanking everyone and making my way off set.
Overall my time on the set of Orange is the New Black was very enjoyable. It was a great experience to be able to meet some of the actors and people behind the scenes of one of my favorite shows. I’m really looking forward to what happens in Season #2. I wonder what’s going to happen to Piper after she gave that vicious beat down to Pennsatucky? Will she be placed in the SHU ? Will Daya have her baby in prison? Will Red eventually get her kitchen back? What is going to happen with Pornstache and his delusion that Daya likes him? I can’t wait for these and so many other questions to be answered. If Season 2 is anything like the first than we are all in for a pretty exciting ride.
This is a guest post by my husband Dave who was invited to attend the Orange is The New Black episode being filmed as part of #StreamTeam #OITNB.
